Understanding Wellness Self-Management
Overview
Wellness Self Management (WSM), also known as Illness Management and Recovery, is a standardized, skills-based program that helps individuals with mental illness to set meaningful goals for themselves, acquire information and skills to develop mastery over their conditions, and make progress towards their own personal recovery. This process takes place in a series of informational and transformative classes designed to offer a recovery-focused lens on life. This training offers an overview of WSM to programs interested in implementing or learning more about this evidence-based practice. Grounded in principles of recovery, the ten core skill areas of WSM are presented, and strategies to teach these skills are reviewed. The underpinnings of this practice include honoring the right to self-determination, promoting informed decision-making, gaining mastery over one’s mental illness, and providing persons living with mental illness with opportunities to meaningfully participate in life outside of the mental health arena. Attendees will leave the presentation with a wide range of practical information about WSM.
