Overview

Mental health apps have the potential to increase care for minoritized and under-resourced youth who face mental health inequities and barriers to mental health services, especially during this pressing time of heightened youth mental health needs. However, mental health apps also pose great challenges, such as youth concerns about confidentiality, data privacy and security, and usability. To help address access barriers to care for minoritized and under-resourced youth, we are developing an app called Connectd for Schools — co-designed through a participatory process — to be used in conjunction with peer navigation. Connectd for Schools is a cross-platform mobile app that provides digital pathways and resources, periodic check-ins, interactive tools, and goals, while also facilitating connections to external providers. Connectd for Schools can be optimized for a particular school or community, highlighting resources relevant to a specific school or role (student, parent, or staff) by using a variety of techniques to continually engage its users. In this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar, we will highlight youth-voiced recommendations for co-designing a mental health app to meet the needs of minoritized youth. We will also demonstrate specific wellbeing pathways and digital resources available within the app to support youth, families, and school staff to address mental health inequities.
