Overview

The feeling words list is a powerful tool that can be used outside of clinical settings to initiate conversations about emotions with children and adolescents. Through simple activities like identifying known words, looking up unfamiliar ones, and making it a fun challenge, caregivers can enhance emotional identification and vocabulary. Consistent engagement in these conversations is essential for supporting adolescents in expressing and understanding their feelings over time.

Feeling Words and Feeling Thermometer

Feelings and emotions can be challenging to discuss with youth and their family members. Sometimes a little support is needed to find the right feeling word. With the Feeling Words and Feeling Thermometer handout, facilitators and clinicians can offer strategies for youth and families to increase emotion regulation and awareness. This handout can be used with individuals, groups, or families. For more information on this technique, watch the course, Enhancing Family Engagement Through Adaptive Practices.
