The Impact of Sensory Processing on Engagement in Everyday Activities
Overview
This training will provide an overview of sensory processing and its impact on the engagement in and experience of everyday activities for persons labeled with mental illness. Sensory processing is a concept commonly used in mental health practice by occupational therapists to understand how individuals experience sensory inputs in their environment, and how these sensory experiences impact self-regulation and participation. Sensory processing approaches can be implemented to support persons labeled with mental illness to develop sensory-based strategies to promote self-regulation and support engagement in valued activities. This training will provide an overview of sensory processing and provide practical strategies for practitioners across disciplines to integrate this knowledge into everyday practice. This training is intended for field-based mental health and outreach workers in Los Angeles County.
