Overview

As the second part of a three-part training on LGBTQ+ youth and family care, this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) seminar will describe what LGBTQ+ families have in common with our non-LGBTQ+ families, and where LGBTQ+ families merit particular support. Participants will explore how to adapt general therapeutic practices and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) practices in particular to LGBTQ+ identities. Mindfulness as a coping strategy for difficult times will be introduced. When and how to bring mindfulness to our LGBTQ+ families will be explored, with a particular focus on predictably stressful times (routine changes, like summer and return to school) and unpredictably stressful times (like our current sociopolitical climate). Participants will leave with a short list of adaptable mindfulness practices for families facing stressors, and be prepared to introduce new support for LGBTQ+ identities as the school year begins.
