In a world increasingly affected by collective and individual trauma, trauma informed care has become essential across medical, behavioral, and community health settings. In this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar, Dr. Kimberly Dennis will explore the foundational principles of trauma informed care and explain how these can shape clinical and organizational practices. Drawing from clinical experience and current research, Dr. Dennis will discuss how trauma, including developmental and complex trauma, alters neurobiology, emotional regulation, and interpersonal functioning. The presentation will highlight the intersection between trauma and co-occurring conditions such as eating disorders, addiction, and depression, with a focus on patient-centered approaches. Dr. Dennis will emphasize the importance of trauma-aware workforce development to mitigate re-traumatization and promote healing environments. Participants will gain practical tools to shift away from punitive or pathologizing models and toward compassionate, evidence-based and integrated care. The ultimate goal is to foster resilience, recovery, and dignity for individuals with trauma and psychiatric multi-morbidity including substance use disorders, eating disorders and mood disorders.
