Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) With LGBTQ+ Youth and Young Adults

Overview
As the third part of a three-part training on LGBTQ+ youth and family care, this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar will present ways that clinicians can provide affirming care to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults using acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Dr. Kurup will provide a brief overview of basic ACT principles and connect these to the needs of LGBTQ+ young people, especially in the current sociopolitical climate. Participants will explore gender- and sexuality-affirming applications of ACT principles and strategies. Participants will then engage in a brief experiential exercise to practice these strategies. The seminar will conclude with practical tips for tailoring ACT strategies to the individual presenting concerns of their LGBTQ+ clients.
