Trauma and the Perinatal Experience: Presentations, Assessments, and Care
Overview
Trauma can be a primary driver of a wide variety of perinatal mental health and substance use disorders, but is often unrecognized and/or misdiagnosed and mistreated. In addition, childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is emerging as a common and profound type of perinatal mental health disorder. At the same time, an enormous amount of stigma and shame prevents many of these patients and their families from seeking much-needed care. This presentation will review the various aspects of trauma that can impact perinatal patients — from preexisting trauma, to complex PTSD, to CB-PTSD — and how mental health professionals can engage evidence-based approaches to assess, diagnose, and incorporate trauma treatment into care plans.
