Overview

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is gaining recognition as a real and often untreated condition in perinatal women. As the number of adult patients with ADHD grows, so do the number who conceive, bear children, and breastfeed, but the data on medication safety lags behind the need. In this presentation, we will review the unique presentation and impact of ADHD on perinatal patients, as well as evidence-based modalities for managing it. We will also examine the current data — and its gaps — for both stimulant and nonstimulant medication use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The goal is for providers managing ADHD patients who are perinatal to gain knowledge and confidence to better help navigate treatment choices.
