Flipping the Mental Health Dialogue: Now is the Time
This is a video.
Overview
This training examines the urgent need to transform public understanding of mental health and substance use disorders. It explores structural, public, and self-stigma; national campaigns designed to normalize help-seeking; and collective strategies for changing attitudes and behavior. The presentation also demonstrates how outcome measurement, economic valuation, and cross-sector partnerships can establish mental health services as investments that generate measurable benefits for individuals, families, healthcare systems, and society.
Key points and strategies include:
- Identifying structural, public, and self-stigma and their affects on help-seeking, access, funding, and health outcomes.
- Explaining how targeted messaging can normalize mental healthcare, strengthen mental-health literacy, and connect audiences with appropriate resources.
- Differentiating communication strategies according to audiences’ attitudes, experiences, barriers, and readiness to seek or support care.
- Analyzing campaign performance through exposure, awareness, engagement, and measurable attitude or behavior change.
- Applying collective-impact and economic-valuation frameworks to strengthen partnerships, demonstrate value, and advocate for sustainable behavioral-health investment.
