Overview
The Skills for Listening and Engaging training (formerly titled Basic Counseling Skills) provides participants with essential knowledge about engaging with individuals who need support and are interested in making a positive change in their lives. The training can apply to both clinical and non-clinical contexts. Based upon stages of change and motivational interviewing strategies, the learner will be able to articulate key components of these models and be able to use them with those they serve. This training is appropriate for non-mental health trained professionals or mental health professionals who may need a refresher on tools of engagement and behavior change.
Learning objectives
- List the basic tools of engagement that support active listening, unconditional positive regard, and acceptance
- Identify the 6 different stages of change and how to engage with individuals in each stage
- Describe the meaning and implications of the Motivational Interviewing acronym of PACE (partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation)
- Articulate the meaning and implications of the Motivational Interviewing acronym of OARS (open-ended questions, affirmation, reflection, and summarizing)
