Overview
When a vaccine is said to have high efficacy, it means it is successful in warding off infectious diseases and illnesses. For the COVID-19 vaccine, high efficacy, practicing health-conscious behaviors, and limiting exposure to infection, can help reduce one's chance of infection. Here to discuss COVID-19 vaccine efficacy and other factors which can impact one's risk of COVID-19 infection is Dr. Hilary Aralis, Assistant Professor and Biostatician at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
Learning objectives
- Explain that clinical trials were not designed to estimate someone’s chance of getting COVID-19
- Describe that one’s chances of getting COVID-19 depends on factors like the prevalence in one’s community, exposures encountered, and time range
- Define vaccine efficacy; analyze what a vaccine efficacy of 95% suggests, that for two individuals who are otherwise comparable, it is expected the person who received the vaccine is twenty times less likely to develop symptomatic COVID-19
