Overview

For students to open up about thoughts of suicide, they need to know that teachers welcome discussions about mental health and that their classrooms—especially on remote learning platforms—are safe places to talk. This video from Didi Hirsch’s Suicide Prevention Center outlines strategies for creating a learning environment that prioritizes mental health so students will come to teachers when they need help. It provides guidelines for how to talk to students at risk of suicide and how to respond to those who resist involving parents. The video also contains a section about how to talk to parents, including those who may not welcome the information, and how to coach parents to help a child through a suicidal crisis.
