Trauma and Trauma Informed Care: An Overview

Overview
Evidence from mental health research indicates that many consumers of mental health services are trauma survivors, and that their trauma experiences shape consumer response to outreach and services. Trauma informed care (TIC) is an engagement technique that recognizes the high prevalence of trauma histories and acknowledges the role of trauma in the lives of survivors. This training will comprehensively explore the diagnostic criteria from the DSM-5 of post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related disorders, as well as other symptoms and behaviors that can result from trauma. Assessment, safety issues, medication, and symptom management will be covered both at the direct service and programmatic levels. It will also examine how vicarious trauma impacts providers. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of TIC and the clinical skills needed to support persons healing and recovering from trauma.
