Indigenous Health Flourishes Where Ancestral Love Is Nourished

Overview
This training is meant to orient clinicians to basic foundational knowledge about the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population, including but not limited to demographics, diversity within AIAN people, and how AIAN identity may affect access to health care. Participants will additionally understand how structural determinants of health (e.g., Federal Indian policymaking) has contributed to current health outcomes, socioeconomic indicators, and intergenerational trauma. Lastly, participants will gain an appreciation of how culturally-based practices and evidenced-based practices can be synergistic, rather than mutually exclusive. Recorded on March 1, 2022.
Please note that CEs are only available by attending the live virtual training, not the anytime session.
Learning objectives
- Describe how at least two Federal Indian policies have impacted the demographics and health outcomes of AIAN in urban areas
- Analyze the complexity of AIAN identity and how it may be associated with access to health care
- Recognize how your own identity can impact the quality of patient care
- Demonstrate at least two examples of tension that can arise within evidenced based practice and cultural humility/anti-racism
