Overview of Major Psychiatric Disorders
Overview
This training gives providers information regarding an overview of major psychiatric disorders. Attendees will also be provided information on major diagnostic changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), as well as more recent changes in terminology and definitions integrated into the DSM-5-TR. This training focuses on major psychiatric disorders commonly seen in program settings, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. The focus includes recent research evidence that supports a recovery vision, helping attendees to understand that clients who experience psychiatric symptoms can move forward in their lives. The training also offers information on the signs and symptoms of each diagnosis and how to identify them. Attendees will leave with a more complete picture of major psychiatric disorders and additional clinical skills that assist individuals in moving towards recovery.
Learning objectives
- Describe the historical context of mental illness
- Identify 3 ways the DSM-5 symptom criteria were changed from the DSM-IV in regards to diagnosing mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, trauma disorders, and borderline personality disorder
- Describe the current understanding of the etiology of personality disorders
- Articulate at least 1 example of a disturbance in the thought processes as well as motor agitation
- List 3 reasons why it is difficult to engage someone who is in a manic phase
