Hoarding Disorder: Diagnosis and Effective Interventions

Overview
Until recently, little was understood about hoarding disorder. Current research and outreach strategies have transformed the types of services we can now offer persons with this disorder. This training will focus on teaching attendees the skills needed to work collaboratively with a client at risk for homelessness due to hoarding behaviors. It will offer an overview of hoarding, identify the populations at highest risk, and help distinguish hoarding from collecting. Attendees will learn how to assess, engage, and manage behaviors of compulsive acquisition, compulsive saving, and clutter and disorganization by utilizing components of motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individual/group therapy, and medication in supportive housing settings. Attendees will leave the training with a more complete understanding of how to create a healthy alliance with people who hoard, and assist them in maintaining housing.
