Preventing Compassion Fatigue in Clinical Staff
Overview
Compassion fatigue is the physical and mental exhaustion and withdrawal experienced by those that care for sick or traumatized people over an extended period of time. Compassion fatigue also known as secondary or vicarious trauma tends to be higher among staff in human service occupations such as social services, healthcare and mental health workers. Those with compassion fatigue can experience symptoms that put their physical and mental health at risk. In this course we will look at the risk factors and the symptoms of compassion fatigue. We discuss the difference between burnout and compassion fatigue as well as ways to prevent compassion fatigue. The target audience for this training is DMH directly operated and contracted clinicians working with individuals with severe mental illness including those on Full Service Partnership or other multidisciplinary teams in Los Angeles County.
