Supporting Parents After Loss: Mental Health and Peer Support Providers
Overview
In this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar, Dr. Kiley Hanish will be describing various types of perinatal loss along with the mental health risk factors associated with loss. Additionally, participants will learn about the parental experience of bereavement. Participants will also learn about the factors uniquely impacting marginalized groups when they experience loss in their family building journey. While describing how partners of birthing people are impacted by loss, Dr. Hanish will provide suggestions for how to navigate relationships in which people respond to grief differently. Techniques for supporting bereaved parents through navigating life after loss will also be explained, including promoting self-care, suggesting strategies to continue to bond with their baby, and encouraging parents to seek outside services if needed.
