Navigating Youth Challenges: Understanding and Addressing Self-Harm and Suicidality in Young People

Overview
This learning pathway is designed to increase participants’ proficiency in the assessment and prevention of suicide and self-harm among young people. This curriculum provides training in de-escalation strategies and identifies evidence-based interventions to support youth, families, and mental health providers in addressing self-harm and suicide.
Pathway Trail
This learning pathway begins with an introduction to self-harm and dispels myths about self-harm behaviors. This training will support participants in identifying self-harm behaviors in adolescents, assessing risk factors, and promoting protective factors. Participants will learn and apply skills to identify and effectively respond to youth engaging in self-harm. A tool to engage caregivers and families in discussing self-harm with young people will be explored.
Now we move on to discussing suicide. How can you provide support when a student demonstrates signs or talks about suicide? In this explainer video, Tracie Andrews, LCSW discusses ways in which everyone plays a role in suicide prevention. Learn tips about how to approach conversations regarding suicide prevention.
This training provides an overview of suicide prevention tailored for youth and families. Participants learn about the nature of suicide, suicide-related statistics, risk factors, and warning signs of suicide. The overview also covers risk assessment, how to help a youth thinking about suicide, and information on available resources for intervention and postvention are covered.
Now, we will look at a video series on preventing suicide in a virtual classroom. This series provides teachers with clear guidelines, talking points, and tools for recognizing and responding to warning signs in a virtual learning environment.
