Overview
Engaging individuals with severe mental illness in services, many of whom are experiencing or at risk for homelessness and other vulnerabilities (e.g., justice-involved, placed on a mental health guardianship), is frequently challenging. This training will outline key aims and processes involved in outreach and engagement, including strategies for developing trust with vulnerable individuals and steps for maintaining a persistent and committed approach to initial engagement and ongoing re-engagement of difficult-to-reach clients (Gandy-Guedes et al., 2018; George et al., 2016). Anytime session recorded on November 15, 2023.
Learning objectives
- Review barriers to engagement and practical strategies for locating and communicating with difficult-to-engage clients
- Discuss person-centered frameworks, such as stages of change, as a guide to tailoring outreach and engagement approaches
- Review the application of motivational interviewing (MI) skills for outreach and engagement activities
