Supporting the Whole Child: Brain-Based Strategies to Support Emotion Regulation in Children
Overview
Strategies designed to help reduce children’s emotional and behavioral challenges are often ineffective and may worsen the problem. This Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar aims to shift a psychologist’s lens from one of identifying misbehavior to one of supporting brain development within the context of attachment and neurobiology. Concrete strategies that move beyond traditional models and into current integrative practices of therapy will be discussed. Psychologists will learn how to help parents shift from ineffective strategies based on outdated principles to embracing concepts such as emotion regulation, co-regulation, sensory processing, and brain integration. These strategies fall within a neurobiological framework while serving to strengthen the parent-child relationship.
