Stress and trauma can take a significant toll on the minds and bodies of individuals and families. This course will provide an inside look at the potential impact that stress and trauma on the brain and how that affects everyday living. This course also highlights ways in which intentional healing can begin. A trauma and resilience informed lens is also described, supporting learners in ways to "focus on the wins."
Understanding Mental Health in BIPOC Communities
Why use BIPOC? Because language matters. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) is a term that dates back to 2013 (Garcia, 2017). BIPOC is person-first and is generally preferred over outdated terminology, such as "marginalized" or "minority," as these are not person-first and are all-encompassing. They also imply a sense of inferiority.
The Ethics and Practice of Applying Radical Healing
In this Stress, Trauma, and Resilience (STAR) Seminar, participants will be provided with a deep dive into the psychological framework of radical healing (French et al., 2020). This framework is centered on healing from racial trauma and builds from elements of liberation psychology, Black psychology, ethnopolitical psychology, and intersectionality theory.
